Growing Corkscrew Vine

Updated: Oct 2

Last year was the first time I decided to grow Vigna caracalla (Corkscrew vine) from seeds. I have acquired so many of them over the last 15 years through seed trading. Although had never grown any or started seed. So I decided to grow it, as I had read it blooms 8 weeks from seed.

Germination was relatively easy. I soaked the seed in water overnight, well actually 2 days! Then I used the Paper Towel Method. When I saw green protruding from the seed I potted them up. This is a seedling in the picture below. Corkscrew vine rapidly fills a trellis in a matter of weeks. Mine had a slow start although once it reached about 6 weeks old it grew leaps and bounds.

Propagation can also be done by cuttings. I have rooted many cuttings and shipped them in their 2 inch pots. I currently have a few rooting right now. I'm not sure how long they take to flower from cuttings. I have only had Corkscrew vine bloom from seeds. Below are a few pictures of rooted cuttings. Cuttings can be dipped in Take Root (rooting hormone powder) and then potted. Provide humidity and keep moist until it roots. You will know it's rooting because it begins to make new leaf buds fast.

So far so good! I am in Zone 8B such that I anticipate having to fuss a little more than I might like yet clearly will the effort be worth it. So beautiful! I used the paper towel approach and had plantable seeds in five days. Looking forward to one seriously lush garden!
